Frank Mir vs. Todd Duffee will main event UFC Fight Night in San Diego
The proposed heavyweight matchup between former champion Frank Mir and Todd Duffee is now official as the new main event for the UFC Fight Night card in San Diego on July 15.
UFC officials confirmed the fight via UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani on Wednesday.
Duffee had been targeting Mir for a fight for the past few weeks as he tried to find an opponent that would finally allow him to crack the top 15 rankings.
With a majority of fighters already booked, Mir was the lone name available so Duffee began a social networking campaign to land the fight and now he'll get his wish.
The American Top Team Fighter has gone 2-0 in his past two trips to the Octagon with both bouts ending by way of first round knockout.
Mir accepts the fight after originally holding out hope that he would face former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar later this year, but he decided to officially retire from MMA for good when he re-signed a new contract to continue performing for World Wrestling Entertainment.
With Lesnar unavailable, Mir opted for the Duffee fight instead and now he'll look to get his second win in a row after knocking out Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva in his last bout in February.
