Hulk Hogan discusses WWE 2K, WWE 2K15 'Path of the Warrior' DLC and Ultimate Warrior
WWE video games have experienced significant transformations over the last quarter century. From 1987’s MicroLeague Wrestling to 2014’s WWE 2K15, they have undergone continuous reinvention to remain fresh and relevant across generations of the WWE Universe.
It’s a narrative that one of the most popular Superstars in WWE history, Hulk Hogan, knows well. With the “2K Showcase: Path of the Warrior” DLC pack for WWE 2K15 now available and the new WWE 2K mobile game on the way, WWE.com spoke with The Hulkster to talk about this evolution, what 2K is doing to further it and the immortalization of The Ultimate Warrior’s WWE Hall of Fame career in virtual form.
WWE.COM: You’ve been a part of video games since MicroLeague Wrestling for Commodore 64. Now, you can play one on your cell phone. What does that say to you about how far wrestling video games have come?
HULK HOGAN: Well, what it says to me is that we’re just now figuring out the future. This is just the beginning. Can you imagine 10 more years from now what’s going to be going on with video games and the kind of craziness we can do? It’s just amazing how much traction we’ve got and how far we’ve come, so I’m really looking forward to the next 10 years with WWE and 2K.
You know what? You’re going to be able to see Hulk Hogan in a full-blown wheelchair match about 10 years from now against Vince McMahon, who’s going to be rolling out in his hospital bed. I’m going to knock him off his rocker. We’re going to have a blast.
WWE.COM: With those advances in technology, has that completely changed your perspective on video games?
HOGAN: Yeah, it really has. It really gives these kids and even adults a chance to vicariously live through these video games, because they’re so realistic. You’ll switch from a Monday Night Raw over to a video game and there’s no difference. It’s amazing.
WWE.COM: Video games can become addictive. We know that Sting himself has admitted that he had a Tetris addiction for a time. Are there any games that have caught you over the years?
HOGAN: No, brother, I don’t have an addictive personality. The only thing I’m really addicted to is chocolate, so I’m not one of those guys who can sit there and play video games for three days in a row and not go to the bathroom. That’s not me.
WWE.COM: In WWE 2K, is there anybody you would like fans to pit you against? Any of the WWE Hall of Famers who you may or may not have faced in the past, or anyone on the current roster?
HOGAN: Yeah, I love it when everybody tells me on my Twitter that they match me up against “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and I beat him every time. I think that’s cool.
WWE.COM: Moving on to WWE 2K15’s “2K Showcase: Path of the Warrior” DLC. You and Warrior faced a lot of the same Superstars throughout your careers. Who do you think will be the biggest challenge for gamers to take on as Warrior?
HOGAN: Well, I think Rick Rude was never given his due. And I know the Warrior got the best of Rick Rude, but I think when it comes down to the gamers, they’re going to find out that Rick Rude is definitely a force to be reckoned with. I think it’s going to be the Warrior’s biggest challenge, to tell you the truth. They were so similar and so much alike, but I actually think that Rick Rude was stronger in some aspects. Apparently, no one in the dressing room could beat him at arm wrestling. So, you carry that into the ring and lock up with Rick Rude, and you’re definitely going to have a tough day at the office.
WWE.com: Now that gamers can relive all these classic storylines and matches, what do you hope that fans get out of “Path of the Warrior” and in-particular your WrestleMania VI match with Warrior?
HOGAN: I think they’re going to realize how great the Warrior was and how great the Warrior is in all of our minds. And I think what they’re going to realize through the game with Warrior is that if Warrior was still with us, he could have remained great into the future, even in the ring. His days were not numbered in the ring. He still had a bright future ahead of him.
WWE.COM: Ultimate Warrior meant a lot to you, didn’t he?
HOGAN: Yeah, he was amazing. He was one of the greatest WWE Superstars I ever wrestled. And this has nothing to do with what went down in the ring, but I learned to love him as a person very, very much. I was just so happy that we were on the same page before he passed away, and I think about him every day. This business is part of me, and I just cherish the moments I had with him.
